The Perfect 3-Day Istanbul Itinerary
Istanbul is one of the world's great cities — a place where you can walk from a Byzantine basilica to an Ottoman mosque to a buzzing modern café all within a few city blocks. Three days is enough to experience the highlights, but the city will leave you wanting more. Here's how to spend your time wisely.
Day 1: The Historic Peninsula
Spend your first full day on the Sultanahmet peninsula, the ancient heart of Istanbul. This is where centuries of empire — Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman — left their most dramatic mark.
- Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya): Start early to beat the crowds. This architectural masterpiece served as a church, a mosque, and a museum before returning to mosque status in 2020. Its dome remains one of the most breathtaking interior spaces on Earth.
- Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Camii): Just across the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque is famous for its six minarets and stunning Iznik tile interior. Dress modestly and time your visit between prayer times.
- Topkapı Palace: The administrative and residential center of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Allow at least 2–3 hours. Don't miss the Harem and the Treasury.
- Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı): Wrap up the afternoon at one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. Over 4,000 shops spread across a labyrinthine network of streets.
Day 2: Bosphorus, Beyoğlu & Modern Istanbul
Cross the Golden Horn on Day 2 and explore the livelier, more cosmopolitan side of the city.
- Galata Tower: Climb for panoramic views over the city and the Bosphorus.
- İstiklal Avenue: The beating heart of modern Istanbul — a pedestrianized boulevard lined with shops, cafés, galleries, and the historic Tünel funicular.
- Bosphorus Cruise: Take a public ferry (vapur) for an affordable and authentic cruise along the strait separating Europe and Asia. The views of imperial palaces, wooden yalıs, and fortresses from the water are unforgettable.
- Karaköy & the Galata district: Finish the evening in this revitalized waterfront neighbourhood with excellent restaurants and rooftop bars.
Day 3: Asian Side & Local Life
Take the ferry across to Kadıköy on the Asian side — a neighbourhood beloved by locals for its produce market, street food, independent bookshops, and relaxed atmosphere.
- Explore the Kadıköy Market for fresh produce, spices, and local snacks.
- Visit Moda for a seafront stroll and a proper Turkish breakfast.
- On the way back, stop at the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) in Eminönü for tea, Turkish delight, and saffron to bring home.
Practical Notes
Book Topkapı Palace tickets in advance online to avoid long queues. The Istanbul Card (İstanbulkart) covers all public transport including ferries, buses, and the metro — get one as soon as you arrive. Most major sights are in walkable clusters, but the city is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes.
